CPC acquired an unmanned aerial vehicle to monitor saiga antelopes in Kazakhstan

The unmanned aerial vehicle (hereinafter – UAV) was purchased at the expense of CPC-K, which since 2016 has been supporting the activities of the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK) to protect the saiga antelopes’ population in Kazakhstan within the framework of the “KieliKiik” joint program, reports the press service of Caspian Pipeline Consortium JSC.

The presentation of this aircraft was held in Kabanbay village of Akmola region, with the participation of the Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan Magzum Mirzagaliev and Deputy General Director of JSC Caspian Pipeline Consortium-K (CPC-K) Kairgeldy Kabyldin.

Modern capabilities of UAVs allow to carry out activities for the conservation and study not only of saiga antelopes, but also Kazakhstan’s biodiversity in general.

“The government of Kazakhstan annually conducts aerial survey of three saiga antelopes’ populations. However, the expensive rental of aircrafts does not allow for systematic patrolling of territories and additional monitoring of saiga antelopes. Entering the market of new unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) makes it possible to expand the boundaries of data acquisition and develop new approaches to the conservation and study of these animals. There is a positive experience in the use of UAVs for environmental purposes abroad, including in the Russian Federation,”CPCreports.

As it is noted, the Supercam S350 unmanned aerial vehicle has the best tactical and technical characteristics in its class – with small dimensions (wingspan of 3.2 m, weight of about 12 kg), it can be in the air for up to 4.5 hours. This device allows you to take photos and video, with the possibility of full data transmission over a distance of 90 kilometers.

The project will allow to develop guidelines for the use of UAVs to account not only saiga antelopes, but also other wild animals (depending on the animal species, landscape type, etc.), including at the state level. UAVs can also be used in the protection of specially protected areas, monitoring of threats to wild animals (fires, etc.) and study of their habitats.

The ACBK will work jointly with PO Okhotzooprom and other subordinate organizations of the Committee for Forestry and Fauna of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The CPC pipeline system is one of the largest investment projects in the energy sector with the participation of foreign capital in the CIS. The length of the Tengiz – Novorossiysk pipeline is 1,511 km; this route transports more than two-thirds of Kazakhstan’s total export oil, as well as raw materials from Russian fields, including those located in the Caspian Sea. The CPC marine terminal is equipped with three single point moorings (SPM) allowing safe loading of tankers at a considerable distance from the coast, including under unfavorable meteorological conditions.
